Has anyone ever tracked their family tree? is it easy to do?

I have been looking at my old website and I found the page that I used to have up. My grandfather, Ivor Brooke, died in December but a couple of years before he told me a story.....and I was going to help him research but we didn't get around to it....

This is taken from my old site....

Sir James Brooke:

I am currently researching by request of my grandfather to see if I am a decendant of Sir James Brooke (1803 - 1868). So far a lot of stories have been passed down the family but we have seen nothing to prove that we are direct decendants. I shall keep looking into it. If you know anything please email me.

Sir James Brooke was an English adventurer and statesman who became the ruler of Sarawak in Borneo (now part of Malaysia).

The sultan of Brunei was unable to deal with a revolt that had broken out in Sarawak. So at his request Brooke put down the revolt in 1840. As a result he was appointed Rajah (ruler) of Sarawak.

Brooke stopped piracy, freed slaves, and encouraged trade and commerce. In 1848 James Brooke was knighted by Queen Victoria.

I wondering what I can do to trace back and see...
